I built my first website in 2001. Google had just turned 3. Facebook and Twitter weren’t even here yet. But the craziest part was that I was NOT someone that anyone would EVER have expected would build a website.
See, I wasn’t building the website because I loved or understood code or techy stuff – far from it. I was building a website because I knew-that-I-knew a website could be the best salesperson EVER!
I’d spent the previous 3 years learning to sell, and selling new cars. After three years, like in any job or with any new thing you learn, things start going round in circles – things become predictable.
I knew that to meet my monthly target and to earn the commission I wanted to earn, I had to ‘touch’ a minimum of 5 to 6 people (prospects) each working day. Some of these touches would be phone calls, others would be full presentations, test drives and attempts to close sales.
I also learnt (and very much experienced) that I would sell more if I used the ‘formula’ I’d been shown. The formula was and still is called ‘The Road To A Sale’.
It’s essentially a ‘sales funnel’ – it’s a ‘pathway’ that you lead your prospect down in a friendly, respectful non-pushy manner (though many salespeople struggle).
I did okay because my only qualification when I began selling cars was that I was a Barber, and a Drummer – so I definitely wasn’t pushy, and most people were fine with that. I had nothing but the system – the funnel – the ‘Road To A Sale’ – the formula – so I followed it. And the more closely and consistently I followed (the already proven) formula, the more cars I sold.
(Yes, you get it, the formula. But stay with me.)
But then…
I realised that I didn’t need to be at a Dealership to sell cars.
What if I could position myself to sell ANY new car? Any brand… at ANY Dealership… I thought.
The short of the story is that I left that job and started my own car brokering business so that I could help anyone in my city at the time (Sydney, Australia) by any new car.
This was 2001. And I didn’t get the website idea straight away. In fact it was a who friend who first suggested I get a website made and I kind of blew the idea off at first… (madness)
…but then I woke up after some weeks and that massive realisation… the realization that a website could be the best salesperson EVER!
[Sell FROM ANYWHERE – Be EVERYWHERE.] And that’s the power of the web.
I got quotes for getting a website made… $10,000, $12,500… others never even got back to me.
I couldn’t afford $10,000 or $12,500. But I’d now become fixated with the idea of getting a website. So I searched my brand new (first) computer to see if it had ‘website building stuff’ in there somewhere… and it did!
Microsoft Frontpage! (not recommended).
Anyway I used Microsoft Frontpage to build a website. It was just like making a series of Word Documents – it really wasn’t that hard – even for me – a Barber and Drummer.
Once I’d finished making the pages I called a friend of a friend who knew about ‘web stuff’ and he kindly helped me publish my pages (my website!) to the world wide web. I now had a website!
And then…
Crickets.
No traffic.
Nothing.
So of course I went to Google and typed:
“get traffic to your website”
BAM! I see Ads for Google Adwords (buying ads on Google).
I signed up and created my first campaigns and within 45 minutes my phone started ringing! I could not believe it!
This was when you could buy traffic from Google for just cents per click.
You probably already know, Google Adwords quickly became much more expensive as more and more advertisers (business owners) started bidding for visibility in the same popular, commercially valuable searches, and as agencies began to take advantage of blissfully ignorant businesses with big budgets who chose and still choose not to ‘get’ Google.
Facebook came along in 2004, Twitter in 2006 and then came the “Google Slap” which meant Adwords traffic became even harder to get, and ‘bids’ for popular searches became even more expensive.
The way you could get cheaper traffic from Adwords was to aim for a higher ‘Adwords Quality Score’ (a new idea at that time). But I’m not telling you all this to ‘educate’ you all about Adwords – it’s because there was something else brewing…
…this was really the beginning of a shift in ‘Search’ (being visible and clickable in Google) …Google was showing us that they value high quality, highly targeted content, and that they would reward you for producing that by allowing you to buy cheaper Adwords traffic.
But then I learned that better quality, highly targeted content could actually help me get ‘organic’ search engine traffic. That-is the listings you see in Google that are not ads.
We don’t pay directly for these ‘organic’ search engine listings, rather we pay for them indirectly by doing the work of building a great business, describing great offerings and offering high quality content, presented on an ‘optimized’ website that is visited regularly by real people. These ‘organic’ listings can bring in business for months – even years.
So out of necessity, along the way, I was learning the ropes of web marketing… SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), Copywriting, Pay Per Click Advertising and then WordPress.
I learned by doing. Investing my own hard-earned money and time.
Meanwhile I supplemented my income by contracting to an Automotive Sales Training company. This was a stretching role that had me speaking, presenting and consulting…
…what I was really doing though was selling sales training to sales people. The CEO of the Sales Training company also personally mentored daily as I went which was invaluable.
Working inside multi-million dollar businesses alongside the owners and their staff certainly gave me every chance to increase my own business acumen.
I learned all I could. One of the coolest things was that I was also able to help many of these businesses successfully leverage the then still new opportunity of the internet.
In 2008 I re-positioned my new car broker business to go 100% online. This freed me to completely dedicate my time to web marketing and consulting.

Another way members could have their membership subscription cancelled by TWF staff is by sharing their login. The system we use has smarts that can detect if anyone is sharing their login or stealing content.
